Straw wattles

Straw wattles, which are sometimes called straw noodles or straw worms, are manmade jute or nylon tubes of compressed rice or wheat straw used primarily for slope or parameter erosion control. Much like a silt fence, straw wattles work by “ponding” water. The water will slowly work its way through the wattle while the sediment is retained. Straw wattles come in a variety of sizes to fit any job but the most popular choice is between 8 and 12 inches in diameter and 20 to 25ft long.
Advantages
- Straw wattles can last up to 2 years when properly installed and maintained
- Straw wattles are light weight allowing them to be moved as needed for equipment to pass
- Straw wattles work great on slopes
Disadvantages
- Straw wattles are small in diameter so they will not stop a heavy rainfall
- Straw wattles should not be compressed as it ruins their effectiveness
